The decision of boyband Blue to represent the UK at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest has been described by their former manager as”reckless insanity”.
The four piece will perform the self-written song I Can at the annual competition, which will take place in May in Dusseldorf, Germany.
It is the first-time since 1997 that the UK has opted for an established act to represent the country at the event. On that occasion Katrina and The Waves triumphed with Love Shine A Light.
But Blue’s former manager Daniel Glatman described the decision to enter the group as “reckless insanity”.
He said: “They will have to win. Anything less and their reputation would be in tatters. It is the equivalent of Lewis Hamilton entering a go-kart race – he will be the strong favourite but there is also the possibility he could lose. So why risk it?”
Bookies suggested the UK entry stands only a slim chance of victory. William Hill list Blue as 25/1 outsiders. Only Jedward – entering for Ireland – have worse odds at 33/1. Last year’s UK entry Josh Dubovie came last after his song – masterminded by hit-maker Pete Waterman – picked up just 10 points.
Formed in 2000, Blue had a two-year hiatus before reforming in 2009. Over their decade long-career, the band has sold more than 13 million records, winning two Brit Awards in the process.
A documentary following the four members of the band – Antony Costa, Duncan James, Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe – as they prepare for Eurovision is due to be filmed in the coming weeks and will be aired in April.
Announcing their Eurovision nod, James said: “We’re celebrating our 10 years together in 2011, so when the BBC approached us it seemed a great way to mark the occasion and also to be part of something which is still a British institution,”
Webbe added: “I’ve always wanted to represent my country, so this is a truly exciting experience for Blue.”

Hackfordjonespr (Music and Entertainment UK PR Company) posted something on Twitter about Lee:
On Wednesday 5th January 2011, @hackfordjonespr said:
Contrary to reports today Lee Ryan has not signed an exclusive album distribution deal with Tesco. Lee is not aware of any deal to release his solo album 'Confessions', and is currently concentrating on recording with Blue for their new album due for release later this year.

Being single! Wow! That wasn't the plan! As ozzy sez!! "I'm going through changes"
I guess he's over with Sammy but that's kinda weird because in his status he says he is engaged.

"The charge of assault against Lee Ryan was dropped in court this morning. Lee pleaded ‘not guilty’ and won all costs connected to the case. Lee has always maintained his innocence and is relieved at the outcome, but is sad that such a case had to take place in the first instance involving the mother of his child."

An assault charge against boy-band singer Lee Ryan has been withdrawn at the request of his partner.
The Blue star was accused of assaulting Samantha Miller, 26, the mother of his young son, Rayn, in London last Wednesday night.
Ms Miller withdrew her accusation when Ryan, 27, from Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
Ryan spoke only to confirm his name, age and date of birth as he stood in the dock dressed in a grey suit, a blue tie and dark suede shoes.
After the assault allegation was read out by the clerk, prosecutor Laura Tams asked for the charge to be officially withdrawn following a request by Ms Miller.
She said: “I have this morning been handed a withdrawal statement dated August 25 signed by Samantha Miller.
“Having taken further instructions there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. I ask the court therefore to withdraw the charge.”

Lee Ryan can wipe off the serious face we cruelly mocked earlier - his fiancee's asked for that pesky assault charge to be dropped.
Lee rocked up to court in his best Burton's suit, charged with assaulting Samantha Miller on 18th August, to find that he was in the clear at her request.
So that's good news. Whether him and Samantha are still together remains to be seen - it doesn't sound like what we'd call the ideal relationship, does it?

TELLY fans will be able to judge the judges on Don’t Stop Believing tomorrow when they perform live.
Blue boy Duncan James, 32, singer Anastacia, 41, West End star Tamzin Outhwaite, 39, and choreographer Chucky Klapow, 30, will be forced to leave their seats and sing the song by Journey that the show is named after.
The song Don’t Stop Believin’, originally released in 1982, failed to reach the UK charts until last year’s X Factor winner Joe McElderry, 19, sang it on one of the live shows.
It later became a smash hit for the cast of Glee.
The Channel Five show, hosted by Spice Girl Emma Bunton, 34, was launched last month in a bid to find the UK’s best song and dance group.
The hit series climaxes tomorrow at 5.30pm.
Six acts – True DynaMix, Dale Diva, Singer Station, The Songtimers, Swish and Three Spires – will compete in the final.
The prize is the chance to record their own album, which will be available for download.
